Southern Highlands Welcomes Summer with Movies in the Park

Summer has arrived in Las Vegas and to welcome it, the Southern Highlands Community Association hosted two family-friendly nights of Movies in the Park. For each well attended movie night, Goett Family Park was transformed into an outdoor cinema under the stars. On June 11, families enjoyed the adventurous journey of Moana and on June 25 it was the music-filled action of Trolls World Tour. Residents enjoyed free Popcornopolis popcorn while watching the features on a double-sided LED screen.

There was no shortage of snacks with Perk Up Coffee selling sandwiches and coffee both nights. Wetzel’s Pretzels joined the party on the eleventh, and everyone rushed to beat the heat and enjoyed frozen lemonade.

In honor of Trolls World Tour, a “dress-up” contest was held, where each contestant dressed up as their favorite music genre. The grand prize winner, Ellie, dressed as Princess Poppy and won a $25 Target gift card. Hunter, in second place, wore a Mickey and the Roadster Racers costume, winning a $20 Target gift card. Another Princess Poppy received the third place prize of a $15 Target gift card.

As the summer continues, Southern Highlands looks forward to hosting more events for its residents and neighbors.

THINGS WERE LOOKING UP AT SUMMER STARGAZING EVENT

It was a dazzling night to remember when Southern Highlands residents came together at Stonewater Park for an exciting evening of Stargazing with the Las Vegas Astronomical Society (LVAS).

In addition to the sky-watching, families safely gathered in person and enjoyed picnicking and field games that were hosted by Celebrate Kids.

The free, family-friendly event was hosted in tandem with LVAS, a nonprofit organization of amateur astronomers formed to promote astronomy in Southern Nevada. In further support of the impactful organization, the Southern Highlands Community Association made a $2,000 donation.

Using about a dozen telescopes, strategically arranged throughout the park and aimed at specific and noteworthy stars and constellations, LVAS volunteers assisted visitors and answered questions about a wide variety of celestial events. The highlight of the stargazing event was the guided tour through the night sky led by Keith Caceres, president of the Las Vegas Astronomical Society. Caceres and his team used a powerful, high-tech laser pointer to further showcase and explain interesting elements in the night sky.

Some highlights of the sky tour included the moon, the planet Venus and prominent constellations and stars visible in the sky on that night, including Orion, Ursa Major (The Big Bear, containing The Big Dipper), and Ursa Minor (The Little Bear, containing The North Star and The Little Dipper.)

For the Love of Spring! Southern Highlands Celebrated Earth Day 2021 with the Chalk About It – Chalk Art Challenge

Let’s talk chalk.

In honor of Earth Day 2021, dozens of Southern Highlands residents recently showed off their artistic talent and creativity by participating in the Chalk About It – chalk art challenge.

With a theme of “For the Love of Spring,” Chalk About It was a challenge that the family could do together – and they sure did. Providing an opportunity to show community spirit and get creative, the socially distant and family friendly sidewalk chalk challenge invited residents to create a spring-themed chalk masterpiece on the sidewalk or in the driveway of their house. For residents who needed chalk, free chalk was made available at the Olympia Management Services office. Upon completing their chalk work of art, participants then uploaded their submission to the Southern Highlands website for entry in a contest. Prizes were awarded in four categories: Family, Adult Solo, Facebook, and Instagram.

Congratulations to all the winners.
